Choose the right pool and dive in

The Berlin Baths Operatives (BBB) are among the largest municipal pool operators in Europe. More than 60 pools, spread across the entire city, offer space for swimming, sauna visits, sports, and relaxation. Every year, the BBB record more than six million visits.

To ensure that information about these offerings is easy to find, easy to understand, and always up to date, the website was thoroughly revised. Technically, visually, and in terms of content.

A solid foundation: TYPO3 as the basis

Even before the relaunch, the Berlin Baths Operatives worked with the TYPO3 content management system. As part of the modernization, this system was expanded and optimized.

What is TYPO3

TYPO3 is an open-source CMS that is particularly well suited for large websites with a lot of content and user groups. It is scalable, secure, can be expanded accessibly, and allows custom adaptations to complex requirements. These qualities made TYPO3 the ideal solution for the Berlin Baths.

Challenge during the pandemic

With the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, the existing system had to be expanded at short notice, for example to reflect time tickets or restrictions in pool operations. It became clear that the existing technical foundation was no longer future-proof.

The e-pixler team supported operations on an interim basis and, in parallel, developed a long-term solution with a new technical foundation, improved design, and comprehensive accessibility.

Accessibility as part of the strategy

Following e-pixler's recommendation, the website was reviewed and revised for accessibility. Today, it meets the requirements of the Accessible Information Technology Ordinance (BITV 2.0) as well as the AA conformance level of the WCAG 2.0 guidelines.

For users, this means:

• low-barrier design also for mobile devices

New features for greater usefulness

The relaunch not only renewed the technology, but also revised the entire structure and user guidance. The goal was to make all relevant information quickly accessible.

• Custom icon set for better orientation regarding pool facilities
• Optimized navigation and mobile user guidance for all devices

Up-to-date information through the pool manager

The pool manager developed by e-pixler is a central element of the new website. It ensures that important operational information is quickly visible online.

How the pool manager works

• Pool management and other authorized persons can enter current notices directly into the system
• Information such as admission stoppages or temporary restrictions appears immediately on the website
• Responsible departments such as marketing or IT are automatically notified by email
• Users receive current information before they set out

TYPO3 offers the technical flexibility to implement such custom solutions efficiently and securely.
