Homepage refresh for the VBB

We won the tender for the service contract at VBB and were also able to adapt the homepage design.

New navigation and homepage refresh for the VBB

The website of the Berlin-Brandenburg Transport Association (VBB) is a central point of contact for a wide range of target groups. From private customers looking for timetables to business partners, authorities, or transport companies. The Berlin-Brandenburg Transport Association (VBB) is the largest transport association in Germany by area and the second-largest by population, with 6.3 million inhabitants. Around 1.5 billion passengers use the VBB's services every year.

To ensure that all users can quickly and accessibly reach their destination, the homepage was fundamentally redesigned and the navigation restructured. The goal was to create a clear separation between B2C and B2B offerings without losing the website's recognizability or design consistency.

As with all projects, the new concept was developed in close coordination with the VBB team. We would like to take this opportunity to once again expressly thank them for the great collaboration.

What does the clear separation of the different users mean?

The deliberate distinction between end customers (B2C) and business partners (B2B) offers many advantages:

  • Increased relevance: Content is accessible in a way that is tailored precisely to the target group.
  • Better user experience: Clearer paths through the site minimize frustration and promote satisfaction.
  • More efficient communication: Information tailored to each target group saves resources and strengthens the impact of the content.
  • Improved external perception: Both groups feel specifically addressed, and no one is overlooked.

Consistent design for everyone

In terms of design, the website remains consistently coherent throughout; the design direction was deliberately chosen to appeal to both B2C and B2B target groups. The color scheme, typography, and structure ensure recognizability and brand strength. We developed the design in close collaboration with the agency boy. The collaborative and creative partnership had a very positive impact on the project.

However, the content implementation differs significantly:

  • B2B section: reduced, clear, factual. Few content elements, but well-structured information.
  • B2C section: more lively, visually active. Eye-catchers, teasers, and targeted disruptive elements draw attention and encourage interaction.

For our designers, this was a comprehensive but rewarding challenge.

In terms of design, the new website uses a modern design language: a mix of Neumorphismand Glass-Morphism gives the interface a clear, contemporary look without much distraction.

As with the previous version, it was especially important to us and the VBB that all content remain accessible. The technical implementation follows common standards for digital accessibility (including WCAG) and ensures that the website is accessible to everyone, regardless of device, limitations, or technical affinity. The TYPO3 CMS is ideally suited for this.

The centerpiece of the redesign is the adapted homepage. It was consistently aligned with the needs of the users: Passenger information, disruption notices, and tickets & prices have been placed much more prominently and are now accessible with just a few clicks.

Another highlight is the new"ÖPNV fact check",an interactive element in the lower area of the page that conveys knowledge about public local transport in a playful way. It offers users an unusual way to access company content and invites them to engage more deeply with the work and services of VBB.
