We are TYPO3 Gold Member!

e-pixler is TYPO3 Gold Member!

After e-pixler GmbH mastered increasingly large TYPO3 projects over the years and the number of employees also steadily grew, it was time to switch from silver to gold. We are now “TYPO3 Association Gold Membership” and are thus supporting the open source community with a significantly higher annual contribution. The financial support primarily goes into the further development of the TYPO3 CMS.

Our Gold Membership also benefits our customers. We now have the opportunity to pass their opinions, requests, and suggestions on to an official contact point in a targeted manner. With this in mind, we are starting new and exciting projects.

For everyone who would like to learn more about the content management system TYPO3 and the work of e-pixler as a TYPO3 specialist, we have compiled some facts.

What is TYPO3?

TYPO3 is a content management system, or CMS for short. We can say that TYPO3 is one of the most popular free CMS platforms. The advantage: TYPO3 websites can be expanded functionally at any time. Thousands of so-called extensions are available for this purpose. This allows us to flexibly adapt our customers' TYPO3 websites to growth as well as increasing demands and business needs.

What are the advantages of TYPO3?

As an open source CMS, TYPO3 is available free of charge and independently of a software vendor. The CMS is continually being developed by an ambitious TYPO3 community and made available for free customization. The numbers speak for themselves. With over 500,000 installed systems, TYPO3 is the most widely used enterprise content management system. The spectrum ranges from simple content pages to mobile applications and exciting multichannel solutions.

Does TYPO3 cost anything?

TYPO3 itself is free of charge. No license fees have to be paid for the open source software. Costs for a TYPO3 website arise from hosting, the domain, and the development and implementation of the website. Since the TYPO3 CMS is continuously being developed, TYPO3 updates must be carried out from time to time. With a TYPO3 ELTS version (Extended Long Term Support), individual updates can be postponed, as ELTS includes extended long-term support for the corresponding TYPO3 versions.

What is the current version of TYPO3?

Since spring 2024, TYPO3 version 13 has been available. The current LTS version was released in October 2024 and will be supported until 2027. TYPO3 13 brings improvements in accessibility, backend usability, interface integration, and content structures. Editing is easier, and the system is overall more performant and requires less maintenance.

We are happy to advise whether switching to TYPO3 13 makes sense for your project and how a migration could proceed.

A quick detour into the terms LTS and ELTS. Long Term Support (LTS) ensures that the corresponding technical support remains available for the version in use through updates, even after the official free support has been discontinued. Thanks to LTS, the corresponding TYPO3 remains compatible with all common browsers and code security is also ensured.

TYPO3 website owners can feel secure for even longer if they choose TYPO3 ELTS, because Extended Long Term Support (ELTS) ensures that the website can be used without problems for several years on the corresponding version. Concretely, this means: just as compatible, secure, and with the security patches that the respective current TYPO3 version also provides.

How often does TYPO3 need to be updated?

TYPO3 is known for being continuously developed by the community, so its functionality is constantly expanding. Improvements and new developments are added, but emerging security vulnerabilities and bugs are also fixed. To benefit from all of this and ensure the highest level of security, every TYPO3 website needs regular updates.

The structure of TYPO3 versions is divided into three components. A major version takes precedence over all other version components. It includes major structural changes as well as new functionalities. Updating to a current major version can be quite time-consuming. Therefore, major versions cannot be skipped. The minor versions serve to expand functionality and keep the major version stable.

Once all core features of the major version have been released through minor versions, the Long-Term Support (LTS) phase begins. During this time, only minor versions are released, which serve to keep the major version secure and optimized. After the major version has been in the LTS phase for two years, the Extended Long Term Support (ELTS) begins. With TYPO3 ELTS version's extended support plans, websites can be operated securely for up to three additional years with a TYPO3 version that is officially no longer supported.

What services does e-pixler offer exactly?

e-pixler is a certified TYPO3 partner. Our developers know the system like the back of their hand. And that's not all: they configure the TYPO3 CMS individually and with a customer-oriented approach so that every company gets its optimal website. This is reflected in the concept, but also in the functionality of the frontend and backend, or in the development of special extensions. Our support includes SEO, data migration, as well as regular updates or a complete website relaunch. We take a lot of time for all our customers to understand exactly what is essential and what is special about each request.

What qualifications does e-pixler have in the TYPO3 area?

e-pixler is a TYPO3 Gold Member and thereby supports the open source community in further developing the TYPO3 CMS. Qualifications and continuous training are the foundation of our work. That is why e-pixler developers qualify as TYPO3 CMS Certified Developer or TYPO3 CMS Certified Integrator. But our consultants and editors also know TYPO3 inside out. This means that some can use the advantages of the system to solve specific business requirements, while others can present customers' content optimally using the appropriate content elements.

Which references can e-pixler cite in the TYPO3 area?

Over the years, e-pixler has launched, relaunched, or significantly optimized many TYPO3 websites and TYPO3 portals. This also involved creating custom TYPO3 extensions. For example, e-pixler developers worked together with the TU's IT department on the foundations for a modern, user-friendly, and competitive online presence for the Technical University of Berlin. To give an idea of the scale: the current content management system consisted of a TYPO3 with 87,410 active pages, 523 domains, and 2,300 editors. Companies with very different focuses and needs trust us; among them are the DRK, the VBB, and the Berliner Bäder-Betriebe.

How long has e-pixler been making TYPO3 websites?

The first TYPO3 websites, or web business cards back then, were developed by a still small e-pixler team 13 years ago.

What requirements are needed for TYPO3 hosting?

For TYPO3 hosting, some technical requirements must be met. For example, the programming language PHP and a database system that can also be used by TYPO3 must be supported. In most cases, MySQL databases are used. Not every hosting package is suitable for supporting a professional TYPO3 site. Therefore, a special TYPO3 hosting package is recommended. This keeps website operators on the safe side. The package is suitable for simple websites, but also for highly complex web projects.

Is TYPO3 considered a secure CMS?

TYPO3 is considered one of the most secure content management systems. The CMS has traditionally stood for the highest security standards. Security is monitored by the TYPO3 Security Team.

Is TYPO3 GDPR-compliant?

Anyone who collects personal data with their TYPO3 website should sufficiently secure this data for greater GDPR compliance. This includes regular security updates to the TYPO3 core and extensions. But measures such as secure passwords, SSL encryption, server hygiene, and the correct settings in the TYPO3 Install Tool as well as the extensions are also mandatory if TYPO3 is to be properly secured.

What is the difference between TYPO3 and WordPress?

Both TYPO3 and WordPress are open source CMS platforms. WordPress started as a blog system, but over time it developed into a full-fledged content management system. WordPress can be a good choice, especially for small and medium-sized web presences.

TYPO3 was developed directly as a CMS for companies and can be used very well in this environment, especially for complex enterprise websites. Many large companies, institutions, and organizations have been using TYPO3 for years. – More information about both CMS can be found on our website under CMS development compiled.
